Cabin 520 was old and smelly, and left a lot to be desired. The TV didn’t work, and neither did the shower’s hot water, so I had a cold shower on a 6-degree morning. There was an ant infestation in the kitchen, and on our last night I got bitten several times by something in bed. The facilities have potential, but the place is very run down and needs a lot of love. With some effort, it could be an awesome family resort, but I wasn’t impressed.

We didn’t stay at Tamar Valley Resort, but spent about two hours there while visiting Grindelwald, and I’m glad we stopped. Splash Golf was the highlight for me. I’d never tried it before and loved it. It’s affordable, easy to join in, and fun for all skill levels. Hitting balls over the lake toward floating targets feels very different from regular mini golf or a driving range. It was surprisingly relaxing, and we stayed longer than planned because we were enjoying it so much. The village is charming, with Swiss-style buildings, little shops and cafés. Between the architecture, peaceful feel, tidy streets and lake views, it feels like a small European town, especially with its alpine design. Even without staying overnight, there’s enough to enjoy for a couple of hours, whether you play Splash Golf, wander around the village or just take in the scenery. A fun, unusual stop near Launceston.

There’s lots of wildlife and plenty to do around the resort. We enjoyed walking by the lakes at sunset, then heading up to the top of the resort lookout, tamahorn, for the view across Launceston and the valley. My partner and I stayed in an executive room, which was clean and comfortable, with a very nice bathroom. The hotel and grounds are lovely and feel like stepping back in time. Staff at the hotel and the little village shops were so friendly and accommodating. We came for the Foo Fighters, found a little gem, and will definitely return to Grindelwald.

We’ve been in a studio apartment for a fortnight while visiting family, and the staff across the establishment have been hard to fault. Reception are super helpful and diligent. The people running the bakery, sweet shop, amusement arcade, splash golf, mini-golf and gift shop/boutique are always cheerful, courteous and ready to help. My personal favourite is the bakery’s bacon and egg muffin for breakfast. The team at Aspenrose, the on-site bar and restaurant, deserve special mention. They’re truly wonderful, always smiling and willing to bend over backwards for customers. I’ve seen it happen, literally, over a runaway birthday party balloon. The meals are consistently top notch and good value. If you want a superb steak, you can’t go wrong here. The whole resort isn’t immaculate. There are a few very minor upkeep issues with the cabins and chalets, though I can’t speak for the main building as I’m not staying there. It doesn’t claim to be 5 Star, and as a family resort it’s right up there in the top 5% of the batting order. Cosy, comfortable, affordable and surprisingly homey. Kids can get outside for pedal carts and boats, and laugh out loud without worrying about upsetting other guests. For families, Tamar Valley Resort is a must do on a trip to Tassie.

I’d heard so much about the “amazing breakfast,” but it was a letdown. The buffet was nearly empty, with one pot of tomatoes being all that was available at one point. We had to wait while food was brought out slowly, and there didn’t seem to be any clear system or urgency. The queue for the pancake machine was over 20 minutes. After waiting more than half an hour for the buffet to be replenished, I gave up and asked for a refund. The staff response felt dismissive and made the experience even more frustrating. The wider property also looks tired and run down. It may once have had charm, but it isn’t maintained to the standard being advertised. A disappointing experience, especially during a busy holiday period when I’d expect them to be prepared.
