Avalon House

Harrietville was a lovely quiet base for our week. There are beautiful walks, trails and rivers around town, and Bright is a short drive away for shops and restaurants. Hotham and dog friendly Dinner Plain are also easy to get to. The Bon Accord was spacious, pet friendly and had everything we needed. Kevin knew the area well and made us feel at home, checking in to see how we were doing. He kept the firewood piled up, and we could enjoy the fireplace as much as we liked. Nothing felt like too much trouble. Thanks for a great week.

We stayed in the mine managers cabin, and the only real plus for us was that it allowed pets. The cabin felt small and not very clean, with cobwebs in the doorways and around the windows, and the garden in our area was untended. The couch was hard and uncomfortable, and the bed was awful, lumpy and very hard. There was only one blanket, and it was so heavy that it made sleeping uncomfortable. Hot water took at least five minutes to come through, then kept cutting in and out because it was shared with the rest of the property. Showers swung between scalding and freezing. When my husband raised the bed problem, he was told nothing could be done. For the hot water, the advice was to keep running it and remember it was shared. That wasn't helpful. I got no sleep for three nights, which made the stay miserable. Be careful on the wooden deck at the front. My husband had a bad fall because it was so slippery. We would suggest staying in Bright instead, where there are more cafes and supplies and nicer options.

We had a warm welcome from Kevin, and the room was already heated with the lights on when we arrived. Our family of four and furry friend stayed in The Bon Accord room at Avalon House. It had two bedrooms, a living area and a kitchen, with both the wood fire and heater keeping the suite warm through winter. The view was picturesque, and having a bakery and coffee van across the road was handy. You can sometimes hear the nearby stream at night. The courtyard was fully fenced, which made it easy to let the dog and kids outside.

Kevin was a great host and made sure we were enjoying ourselves, even putting up with our antics. The place was spacious and nicely furnished, and you could have privacy or socialize depending on what you wanted. We also had a well equipped kitchen, bikes to use and a great outdoor firepit.
