The Convent Boutique Accommodation & Café

The heritage building is beautiful, with a large lawn and lots of places to sit on the deck. It’s conveniently tucked back from the main street, and the staff were friendly. The coffee was fine, too. The food was the letdown for a business described as boutique. I ordered poached eggs and bacon on sourdough for $13.50. The eggs were cooked right through, though I’ll take some responsibility since I hadn’t specified otherwise. There was only one small piece of sourdough, and it arrived so soggy it was almost mush. The meal tasted fine, but was more like the breakfast you’d expect at a tradies motel. I’ll likely give it another go next time I pass through and see if this was a one-off. Five stars for the venue and staff, minus two for the lackluster food.

The restored building has high ceilings, so we didn’t need the AC at night. We had breakfast in the Cafe in the same building, and the pool was perfect for a late-afternoon swim. Don’t forget to head 16k north of Hay to watch the sunset and take your camera. A fantastic halfway stop on our trip between Sydney and Adelaide. We stayed one night.

The coffee was pretty bad, and the eggs needed seasoning, though the bacon was nice. Our order took ages, and the waitress seemed disinterested and brought it to the wrong table even though we had table numbers and it wasn’t busy. Tables were left uncleared for a long time, so I’m guessing they’re short-staffed. It’s a nice building, but needs some TLC. Not really worth a visit, to be honest. They need to get their act together.

We enjoyed the garden and verandah, and the service was fast. The coffee was excellent, and breakfast was delicious: granola with fruit and yogurt, plus a perfectly cooked omelet with ham, cheese, tomato, onion, and spinach/basil. We also had scones with jam and cream the day before, and they were delicious too.
