We’ve been staying at Tingeera a couple of times a year for 15 years, ever since work took us from Hervey Bay to Brisbane. We still have family in the Bay area, and we used to have lovely memories here: taking the kids to the beach, walking to the in-laws’ house for a BBQ, and having fun in the pool. It’s sad that the place now feels dirty, unsafe, run down, disappointing and overpriced. It’s also unclear who actually manages the apartments. There’s the realty management company on one side and the body corporate on the other, which is run by what I’d call the “Grey Haired Mafia,” a group of entitled, rude and obnoxious elderly women. The problems we had included broken, unsafe furniture. A chair broke and nearly sent me into a glass door. There were ants everywhere in the kitchen and bathroom, stained furniture and blinds, and broken bathroom fixtures. I launched my drone from the balcony to film the beach, in line with aviation safety regulations. Shortly afterward, the body corporate treasurer came to my door with the gardener acting as her bodyguard and accused me of flying it into people’s apartments. I showed her the video and she quickly changed her tune. There’s nothing in the body corporate by-laws about using drones. On our last day, we took the kids for a swim at the beach and planned to rinse them off and use the pool. Another elderly woman, apparently the body corporate secretary, charged at us and said we couldn’t use the pool because they were doing water aerobics. They were just bobbing in the water, and we couldn’t even share the pool, despite paying AUD 300 a night. We complained in writing to the realty manager, who said she was out of line. Hervey Bay has a lot of hotels and apartments. Tingeera used to be a great, family friendly place, and we were regulars. Not anymore. Next time we visit family, we’ll stay somewhere clean and tidy without the “Grey Haired Mafia.” Tingeera isn’t a holiday destination anymore. 1/10.

I got a discounted rate for room 307, and I’m glad I didn’t pay full price. It’s not worth what they usually charge. The bedrooms are big and beautiful, with large balconies at the front and back. The beds were okay, nothing special. Bathrooms are large, the kitchen is spacious, but the lounge is on the small side and the dining area is a bit ordinary. Better furniture would help. The bay view from the room is great, and the beach and playground are across the road. The grounds are beautiful and well kept, and the outside is clean and tidy. Inside the apartment was dusty and dirty, though, so the cleaners need to lift their game. I’d probably come back if I’m in Hervey Bay again.

I wouldn't stay here again. Alarms kept sounding through the night, and when I called the police they said they couldn't help because they didn't know which unit the alarm was coming from. Whoever had the faulty alarm should have called them instead of leaving the whole neighbourhood awake for hours. I wouldn't let an alarm of mine carry on like that overnight.

The rooms were spacious, with lots of cupboard space, decent bathrooms, and beds that were okay. The balconies were huge, which the kids loved. But the doors had no screens, and the locks were faulty and low enough for a toddler to reach, so I was worried about the children getting out there unattended or while we were asleep. The place could use more care. The kitchen shelves were dusty, the microwave was dirty, and there was coconut left on the bench. The dining chairs had no padding, and the outdoor chair was so wobbly we didn't risk sitting on it. We also missed having a hair-dryer since we'd forgotten ours. These things didn't spoil the stay, and we had a nice time, though it didn't really have a beachy feel.

We were greeted by friendly, helpful staff who knew the area well and had plenty of suggestions for things to see and do. The apartments were clean and roomy, and the customer service made a good impression. The view was fantastic, and I loved the early mornings and evenings, with walking tracks along the shoreline nearby. There are shops, cafes and restaurants close by, so we didn't need to cook for three nights. The meals we had seemed good value for the portions and price. We've still got kids, so we skipped the Thai and fancier places for now, though they smelled great. I enjoyed it enough to come back next year.
