That handmade Tasmanian Huon Pine tub on the deck was a highlight. Sitting in it with the hot water filling up, surrounded by the scent of the wood and the stars overhead, felt wonderful. We slept incredibly well too, the bed may have been the most luxurious and comfortable one I’ve ever had. I noticed the next morning that it was listed in the minibar catalogue as something you can buy, which could be a future project for me. The generous minibar had local wine, beer and whisky, and the fridge and pantry were stocked with sweet and savoury treats. Breakfast provisions and the gourmet kitchen made for a delicious breakfast. We stayed in and ordered dinner from the recommended Astor Grill across the road. They brought it right to the door with cutlery, napkins and freshly baked bread, and both the service and food were delightful. We’d only been there an hour when we were already wandering from room to room, looking out through all the windows and enjoying the quiet, beautiful setting and the complimentary French champagne. The place is at the top of Avalon City Retreats, and the design of the Omni Pod frames those sweeping views so beautifully. From the balcony at sunset, we watched boats on the Derwent and people heading through St David's Park towards Salamanca. We could also see traffic along Davey St and Macquarie St. When the Sun went down and the Moon came out, the lights above and below made it feel like being in a New York penthouse. There was plenty to keep us occupied inside, with free wifi, an iPad, games, books and binoculars for looking down at Hobart. I left feeling inspired, creative and a bit decadent, and wished that feeling could have lasted longer. I wish we’d stayed more than one night. Next time, we’ll bring friends and stay a few more days above Hobart.

A great spot for a retreat or function, with awesome views of Hobart’s twin arteries, Davey and Macquarie.
