Discovery Parks - Pilbara, Karratha

We left a day early. Showers and toilets weren’t clean while we were there, and bathroom bins hadn’t been emptied. Maybe we missed cleaning day during our three days, but with so many long-term FIFO guests, I’m sure they could put on more staff. The pool had stones on the bottom all three days; I’m not sure whether the cleaning machine would pick them up. The park seems clearly set up for FIFO workers, with tourists not a priority in this town. It’s also more expensive than a tourist-based park, though I understand supply and demand.

The staff were friendly and the park was very clean and tidy. The pool area was great. With all the red dirt around, they did a good job trying to keep the showers and toilets clean. We had younger kids and could have used another playground, but it’s a worthwhile place to stay while travelling in the area. Good location and it felt very safe.

I called a week ahead to sort out the details of a month-long stay, but when we arrived we were told something different from what we’d discussed. The male manager was extremely rude and arrogant, wouldn’t work with us on a solution, and was very unhelpful. The lack of customer service skills and attitude make me think it might be time for him to throw in the towel and find a new career. I’d never recommend this park, even if you’re desperate. There’s nothing to promote here, just an overpriced park and an arrogant manager. What a shame for Karratha, since there aren’t many options.

A good place to live or visit, with good access, decent air con rooms and a swimming pool. Bring your own internet. Lock your vehicles, as there are occasionally unwanted guests.
