Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel & Apartments

The room was roomy, the bed and pillows were good, the air conditioning worked well, and the staff were nice. It's a neat mix of old and modern, with a shower that has good pressure but a touchy temperature. Sleep was the problem: twice during the night, a very loud, high pitched sound went on for ages, like steam escaping or old pipes releasing pressure. There were two packs of earplugs on the nightstand, so I think they know about it. Without that noise, it'd be five stars.

The small window meant there wasn't much natural light, and the fire alarm went off three times during my stay for no apparent reason. Still, I'd highly recommend it. It's good value, with a perfect spot just a short walk from town and next to Cataract Gorge. Reception staff were lovely, and my room was clean and spacious enough for me. The Wi-Fi was very responsive, and I appreciated having a Smart TV with YouTube and Netflix.

We keep coming back to the Penny Royal when we're in Hobart and plan to stay again. It's a short walk to town and events, and the rates are reasonable for such lovely accommodation. The rooms are spotless and well appointed, with a nice atmosphere and views toward the river across a road. The staff are always friendly and helpful.

The best thing was the great housekeeping. The rest was disappointing for what we paid. There are two accommodation sites, one by the adventure park and one beside a pub and busy road. We were in the latter, directly above the adjoining pub's cooling fridge compressor, and the loud noise continued 24/7. The room felt tired, only one window opened, and the far end smelled mouldy. The air con also worked on and off and made extra noise, on top of the compressor. The earplugs in the room made sense.
