The restaurant food was phenomenal, and the location made it easy to get around, with everything central just outside the door. But our six-night stay, from the 26th February to the 5th February, had a lot of problems. Our room was tiny, with no space for suitcases, and the curtains and blinds left a gap at the window, so people could see in while we were getting dressed. The bathroom was spacious, but there was no soap, shampoo or conditioner. The room also had no cups, glasses, cutlery, coffee, tea, sugar or milk. When we asked the bar staff, they said the cleaners hadn’t stocked any rooms and they’d try to find some for us, but nothing arrived, so we bought our own. There was no reception, so we had to speak to the bar staff on arrival. The room was never serviced, and when the bin overflowed we had to find somewhere to empty it. Eventually a cleaner emptied it and gave us a couple of bags for the rest of the stay. There’s no hotel parking. The paid parking behind the hotel didn’t feel very secure, and hoons parked there at night.

The room smelled of bleach, and that evening a trance and electronic music event was planned about five metres down the corridor. We’d booked through Booking.com before a five day hike, based on the room being described as safe and comfortable. We knew it might not be perfectly quiet, but nobody told us about the event. During it, the room was so loud it felt like standing in front of the stage. The windows and doors shook. As a musician, I know how loud that is, and it was too much to safely stay in the room without risking a headache. The owner wouldn’t refund us through Booking.com and became belligerent. He said we should have “done our research” and kept interrupting when we tried to explain that the room was impossible to sleep in. He rudely waved “goodbye” at my friend, then threatened to call the police as we left, even though we’d paid and were leaving without a refund. The bar seemed fine, and loud music makes sense there. Taking money for bedrooms while hosting big events like this felt unethical. We left Launie feeling deflated.

We paid $142 for a Saturday night, and found a quiet room elsewhere for an extra $40. The hotel website mentions that Saturday nights can be noisy because of bar music below, but nobody told us before arrival about a private function next to the rooms that was due to run until 3am. We only heard at check-in, when cancelling wasn’t a realistic option. That’s very different from general bar noise downstairs. During the soundcheck, the windows and door were vibrating, so it was clear sleep wouldn’t be possible. When I raised it, we were told we shouldn’t book a room above a pub and were criticised for using Booking.com. The manager repeatedly spoke over me when I tried to explain. Once we decided to leave, he gave us a dismissive wave and a condescending “bye bye” with a smirk. There was no alternative offered, and our refund was declined. If events are scheduled in advance, guests should be told before they arrive and given a chance to cancel. Telling us only at check-in felt deliberately timed to avoid refunds. If you care about an honest establishment and a good night’s sleep, book elsewhere.

A spontaneous Tuesday date night at the Star Bar turned out to be a real treat. Annaliese was warm and professional, and looked after us promptly. We had the squid salad and fisherman's basket, both generous portions with excellent flavour and quality. Josh made our drinks just right and gave us service well above average. We were so impressed we’ll keep coming back. Thanks, Star Bar!

This has officially become my regular bar in Launceston. You come for the great music, drinks, food and atmosphere, then somehow stay much longer than planned. The cocktails always hit, and the service is spot on. Josh, the owner, is a gem and still works behind the bar. James, Noah and Annaliese make up a dream team, always smiling, remembering your drink and making the night better. 10/10, I’d recommend it, and I’ll probably end up spending hours here again.
