The Eaglehawk Country House Hotel Maldon

We planned on one night and ended up staying three because we just didn't want to leave. The hosts, Liv and Adrian, were so welcoming and accommodating, and nothing we asked for on arrival was a problem. We arrived later in the day, while there was still enough light to see the place. The original red brick heritage buildings have been beautifully maintained over the years, and our room was immaculate, restored with loads of detail and decorated to suit the bygone era. The bed and room were lovely, with cottage gardens, paths and roses along the way. There's a good-sized pool and BBQ facilities, so you can go out to eat or stay and enjoy the motel. The main St is just around the corner, within walking distance of shops, historic gold mines and beautiful buildings. The local Butcher's meat is to die for, and the takeaway shop, with a little speakeasy out the back, serves a bloody good hamburger and old-fashioned fish and chips. We found this gorgeous little town by accident and couldn't believe how beautiful it was, so we came back after a few days away for a couple of days to recover from our road trip. If you love history and have a bit of gold fever, Maldon and the Motel are a great base for seeing the goldfields and all their glory. Ten gold stars for our wonderful hosts. We'll be back soon.
