The location is great, and I’ve never seen a hostel offer wetsuits, surfboards, snorkel gear and fins free from reception. The price is pretty reasonable for Sydney, but you need to know what “cheap” can mean here. The staff are the best part, really lovely, helpful and sweet. The place itself feels run down and grimy. Floors and bathrooms were dirty, there was a strange smell, and the common areas had ripped couches, sticky surfaces and a chaotic kitchen. There are only two staff members, handling reception, cleaning and all the laundry, and they’re only around from 9:30 to 5. There’s no spare linen. They may have an arrangement for guests to clean in exchange for a free stay, but it didn’t seem like anyone was doing much of that. Many residents seem to live there permanently, and their rooms looked chaotic and dirty, with belongings everywhere and some beds without linen. We were lucky to share with two other short-stay guests. There were mostly young men around, no women-only dorms, and no aircon in the rooms. I wouldn’t stay here alone as a woman. I probably won’t come back, though it might suit a different crowd.

Such a fun hostel, with really nice people and staff. They have loads of free gear too, including surfboards and snorkelling equipment.

The price felt like a rip-off, especially since it dropped to a lower rate just a day after I booked. I’m furious about that, and the stay was a waste. The room was in terrible shape. The floors were sticky, there was one tiny window that barely opened and no airflow, and the smell was so bad it was hard to breathe. It smelled mouldy or rotten. Even the “clean” sheets handed to me at check-in had hairs and crumbs on them. I’ve stayed in plenty of hostels and can put up with a messy room, but this was too much. I don’t want to imagine how it gets in summer. The kitchen and common space were also really dirty and chaotic. The place is large, and they run drinking games and other activities, which might work for young travellers looking to meet people, but it also gets very loud. This was probably my worst hostel stay ever. I can’t recommend it.

Good for a one-night stay, I think. It’s close to the beach and the staff are friendly, though the place is a bit old. No aircon or fan.

I arrived in December and I’m still here! I’ve made amazing friends, and there’s a really lovely community. There are things that could be improved, like at most hostels, but this is the only one that’s made me feel so welcome. Reception staff are amazing, and my favourite part is the events. The two people who run them are so much fun and make every event special 💖
