Mansfield Valley Motor Inn

Mansfield is such a lovely town, but this accommodation made my stay unpleasant. I was there for two weeks for work, staying in both Room 19 and Room 21, and I wouldn't choose to return unless management changed. The rooms were dirty. The carpets in both rooms were still unclean on the weekly occasions I saw them, and they weren't even vacuumed during the week. The place is very outdated, the fixtures are old and tired, and half the lights in my room didn't work. I'm not sure the quilts are changed either. The red blanket cover seemed to stay in the room and not get replaced. For an idea of the cost, it was $150 a night in November and $250 a night in December. Work paid, luckily, because at those prices I'd expect better maintenance.

One star feels generous. The room stinks, really strongly. There's visible mould built up on the retro cabinetry, and it smells damp enough to seem like a potential health risk. The room looks clean enough, but the smell made it hard to relax or touch anything without worrying about catching something. Hygiene matters a lot to me, and at these prices it should be a given. I was away from home for work for a week, so this room was my home during that time. It was very disappointing and disgustingly unhygienic. There were cobwebs and spiders on the ceiling, dust everywhere, and cockroaches too. After working all day in the cold, I'd come back each night to find my heater switched off. The cleaners were supposedly coming daily for room service, but they only came in to empty the bin and turn the heater off. I returned to a cold room two nights in a row before I raised it with reception. She was very sorry and immediately offered me anything I needed for the room, but an apology wasn't enough. On the last night the cleaners came in, they made the bed, left fresh towels, and kept the heater on. At that time of year, it should be common sense to leave it on so a paying guest comes back to a warm room. It was really frustrating. And how did the cleaners miss the cobwebs on the ceiling and the layer of dust everywhere? I won't be going back.

The shower was hot with good pressure, and the pool looked clean and inviting. The room was simple, with a bed, table, kitchenette and bathroom. The microwave was tucked under the sink, a bit awkward to get to but it did the job. We could have used plates, a bowl and cutlery, but managed without them.
