The Esplanade Picnic Point

The lorikeets were either a huge plus or a real downside. Every afternoon, about 5000-10 000 rainbow lorikeets came into the tree right outside our unit, screeching so loudly it was ear deafening. Amazing to watch for a while, but eventually they became a nuisance and we couldn’t even hear ourselves talk. We stayed six nights in January 25 and had a lovely time otherwise. From the third floor, the unit had a gorgeous outlook past tall gum trees, across the water, with mt Coolum in the background. It was clean, comfortable and well appointed, and there are well-placed walking paths nearby. Getting in was a hassle. There was no onsite reception, two locked gates/doors, and we’d received no instructions. We waited outside until another guest let us in. The contact number didn’t answer for a while because they were away and had “bad reception”. The directions for which key lock to use, there are about eight, and how to open it were very unclear. Once we got inside, things were good. The unit’s car park was a nightmare to get into and out of. It’s at the end by a pillar and difficult to park in even with a small car. Access is from the busy main road, although the street entrance is on the esplanade.

Bring your own toiletries, including soap and shampoo, and tissues, as none are supplied. The mobile number they provide didn’t respond to calls or SMS. There are business cards at the unattended reception with a 1300 number you can call and leave a message. The location is peaceful and quiet, with water views, and The Sunshine Plaza is a five-minute drive away. The lounge has air conditioning, but the bedrooms only have fans. The kitchen was fairly well equipped, though the frying pan spatula was melted and distorted at the tip, so it wasn’t safe to use.

The river views are gorgeous, though it can get a bit windy. Renovations are happening now, so the place should be upgraded soon. There are public toilets, and it’s nice to walk along the path or take the dogs for a swim. The view is worth it.

A popular spot on the Maroochy River, with a boat ramp for launching water craft, plus a BBQ area and tables and chairs. A lovely place to visit and relax, have a picnic or do some fishing.
