The owners were disorganized, but in an endearing way, and I enjoyed the rather confusing chats with them. The cabins sit in rows on a hillside garden, with a shared space by reception in the middle. It has old timber finishes and feels like it’s mainly used for school camps or something. Warburton is lovely in autumn, a quaint town by the river. The online complaints were pretty accurate: the place is run-down and dated. Still, it’s cheap, about $115 a night for two, so I didn’t mind figuring out the hot and cold taps to get a decent shower. If it goes too cold, start over. Bring a beer and make a game of it. There’s beauty in mediocrity, and really, what’s the rush? A nice budget option on the hillside in a nifty little town. Go on, treat yourself.

The staff were friendly and even gave me a room upgrade for free. The old place has loads of charm and a very cool atmosphere, though it could use some maintenance. With its amenities it would work well for a big group, as long as you’re not expecting modern five-star rooms.

It’s not new or anything like the Hilton, but the place is picturesque, really clean, and quiet. The rooms are roomy and comfortable, and it felt like being at home. Service was first class, with everyone helpful and friendly. I’d recommend it for a relaxing stay.

GG has a peaceful garden setting, about 1.6 km from the main drag, and it’s a budget place, so you get what you pay for. I was travelling alone on a bike trip and stayed one night. I seemed to be the only guest, and I didn’t run into the problems other people had. The room was plain but comfortable, though the supposed King Size bed was only king-sized if you’re a dwarf, perhaps. There were plenty of tea bags and coffee but no cups, so I had tea in a glass. The milk portions in the fridge were frozen solid, and there was just one wine glass. The amenities were clean and adequate, but maybe my standards are low. The window faced straight onto the walkway, so I had to keep the curtains shut and the lights on for privacy. Much better than a tent if you’re on a tight budget. It felt like taking a trip back to the 1970s, just not at 1970s prices.

I was told I’d get a refund, but nobody ever got back to me. When I called, I just got a disconnected phone message. After one night here, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Our room looked nothing like the photo. When we returned after dinner and pulled back the sheets, there were bugs throughout the bed and all over the room. We spent ages removing them, then slept badly, worried we’d get bitten. In the morning there were bugs everywhere, including lots of dead ones under the bed. Find somewhere nicer to stay.
