The open space at Federation Square feels lively, with people on deck chairs, coffee from local cafés, and views to take in. It’s a good starting point for tourists and an easygoing spot for locals, right across from Flinders Street Station, with trams, walking paths, and the Yarra River close by. There’s often something happening, from festivals and pop-up events to cultural activities. I caught a live art installation and an outdoor screening during my visit. The architecture is bold, with geometric angles, glass, and stone. You’ll either like it or hate it, but it’s hard to ignore. You can visit ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) or the Ian Potter Centre, or just spend time in the city atmosphere. Getting around the square can be confusing, with uneven surfaces and odd angles that make wayfinding tricky. Much of the open area is paved, with little greenery or shaded seating, so it can be uncomfortable on a hot day. Some cultural spots are great, though other parts feel commercial or underused, and a few areas seem neglected or in need of an update. Still, it’s a must-visit in Melbourne. Bring a hat or umbrella around midday. It’s artsy, dynamic, and a little rough around the edges, which is part of its charm.

There’s always something happening at this iconic Melbourne spot, whether it’s fashion, sport, dance, or film. It keeps surprising me.

With festive lights all around and people chatting happily, my recent visit to Federation Square felt warm and full of life. The Christmas decorations were exquisite, and the shared celebration really brought out the spirit of the season. I was struck by how well the square brings together culture, community, architecture, and Melbourne’s civic life. Federation Square opened on 26 October 2002. It covers a full city block opposite Flinders Street Station and spans about 3.8 hectares. Built above active rail lines, it was made possible by thousands of tonnes of steel beams, large concrete crash walls, and systems that absorb vibration. That engineering made it possible to create a public civic and cultural precinct above the busy railway. LAB Architecture Studio designed it with Bates Smart, using a modern, geometric style that reflects the idea of “federation”, bringing different elements together as one. Since it opened, the square has become a landmark and an active centre of Melbourne’s cultural life. It’s home to major galleries and institutions including the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), NGV Australia (The Ian Potter Centre), and the Koorie Heritage Trust. The place also has deep ties to its history and setting. The land was traditionally owned and cared for by Indigenous communities, so the square and every gathering there are part of a long cultural story. Walking through during the festive season reminded me how Federation Square connects Melbourne’s past and present, and its civic spirit. Places like this don’t just hold buildings and events, they create moments of belonging and shared experience.

At the F1 Fan zone, the DJ seemed more focused on hearing himself than putting the actual F1 race on the big screen. The race programming needs work. If you want to watch F1 with commentary, go somewhere else. 🥲😡🏁🏎️
