Hillcrest Merimbula

The only real downside was a serious bug infestation. They came through gaps in the doors and buzzed around, keeping me up most of the night. In the morning I found them dead around the room. I don't think it's the hotel's fault, just the environment, but some sort of spray treatment is probably needed. The Hillcrest refurbishment is incredible. The room was stunning, clean, and the balcony view was lovely. I loved the room and the facilities were great. The location was great too. My flight meant I couldn't make check-in in time, but they still made sure I had the information and a key waiting when I arrived. I'd definitely stay again.

The views over Merimbula are stunning, and the grounds, pool, tennis court and shared areas are clean and well kept. There’s plenty of parking, it’s quiet, and the renovated room had a comfortable bed and good air conditioning for the humid weather. A few things to know: reception only operates for limited hours around check-in and checkout. The motel sits at the top of a hill, so walking to town and back is a workout. Cleanliness can depend on which areas you look at. Since every door opens straight outdoors, the bright light above the white door draws in flying bugs at night. Opening the door can let them into the room, where you may spend ten minutes killing them. The bathroom fan drones loudly, and the lights can’t be on without it running. For a motel, it’s expensive.

The grounds are set up nicely for a relaxing break, with a pool, fire pit, tennis court and places to lounge. I’d happily come alone to unwind upstairs in the shared area with the views and funky music, or return with friends or family. We only had one night for our anniversary and wished we could stay longer. The location and views are outstanding, and the staff communicated well from arrival through checkout. They offered us an upgrade after I mentioned the occasion. When we opened the bedroom door, there was chilled sparkling wine and a handwritten anniversary card waiting. The room was simple but felt luxurious: lovely Mayde teas, gorgeous Sans toiletries, and a king bed with soft linen and lots of pillows and cushions. I floated in the pool around 10pm under a clear sky full of stars, with a red moon that night. I was a little disappointed there wasn’t a microwave in the room, but found one downstairs in the shared area with the laundry and sports gear to borrow. We had a special stay and felt so welcome. Thanks again, we hope to come back soon.

I needed somewhere at the last minute for a work trip and happened to pull in to ask about a room. Casper at reception was friendly and helpful right from the start, with good suggestions for dinner and coffee the next morning. The room had a retro look with some modern touches, and the view towards the oyster farm and ocean was amazing. I was after somewhere peaceful with a view, and got both. I’d recommend it and will book here next time I’m in Merrimbula.
