Jackaroo Treehouse Mission Beach - Hostel

Our stay at Jackaroo Hostel was deeply disappointing because of how staff handled the situation, not because of the cyclone and flash flooding around Mission Beach. A cyclone was forecast and unfolding while we were there, affecting transport and safety, but nobody warned us about the severe weather or possible travel disruption. We didn’t know the region and even a basic heads-up would have helped us plan. Our coach was cancelled due to flash flooding on departure morning, and we spent the whole morning urgently trying to rearrange our travel. The hostel was completely empty, but staff showed no understanding or flexibility. At 10:40 am, a staff member came into our dorm without knocking and shouted that checkout had been at 10 am and we had to leave immediately. One of us was naked. We’d never been told the checkout time. We understand and respect checkout policies, but barging in and yelling at guests in those circumstances was completely unacceptable. At checkout, staff were rude again and falsely said we hadn’t followed the bedsheet instructions, claiming other staff had to collect them for us. That simply wasn’t true. Before leaving, we also overheard staff speaking negatively about us and the situation. It was unprofessional and added to the disrespect we’d experienced throughout the stay. The hostel communicated poorly, showed no compassion during an emergency and seriously disrespected its guests. I’d strongly caution travellers, especially those unfamiliar with tropical weather, to think twice before staying here.

The hostel is in a beautiful location and is kept really clean. The staff were amazing, and there’s a cute bar and cafe on site. I had a wonderful stay. If you want a unique experience in Mission Beach, I definitely recommend it.

I was shocked by the condition of the place during my two-night stay. There was visible mould on the mattress, meaning guests were sleeping on it and breathing in mould spores. The owner said it “must have appeared in the two days I was there,” which was ridiculous. Clearly the mattresses weren’t being checked or cleaned properly, and the manager took no responsibility. The bar staff were rude too, with zero customer service and a hostile attitude. Asking for basic hygiene and respect left you feeling like a nuisance.

I planned to stay just one night, but ended up extending my visit. The Treehouse has a great bar and cafe, and the staff were welcoming and helpful. It’s a beautiful hotel in a lovely location, and I was lucky enough to spot a cassowary and its baby. A great place to stay if you’re heading to Mission Beach.
