The Imperial Hotel

The pillows were comfortable, and the kitchen equipment came in handy. I wish the room information had mentioned when we booked that there was a toaster and a small cooking hob. The room itself was hot and had no fresh air, and the bed creaked whenever I sat on it. The mattress needs replacing. We’d moved there from our first room, which was above a very noisy air-conditioning unit serving the hotel. The second room had no windows, and a ceiling fire alarm, or something similar, had a very bright light that shone in our eyes all night. It kept me awake most of the night.

The accessible room worked really well for us, and we had no trouble with noise on Saturday night. We slept soundly. We also enjoyed a great pub evening meal. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere, with everyone enjoying the evening, and the staff were very friendly. Thank you, Imperial.

The salt and pepper squid was the highlight of lunch for me, tender and lightly crisp, with loads of flavour. The orange segments added a juicy sweetness, while the beetroot brought a gentle earthy note. Almond skordalia underneath made it smooth and creamy, and everything on the plate came together beautifully. I’d come in at 4pm because most other restaurants around town close at 2.30pm and I needed somewhere still serving food. So glad I found this place.

The pub was great, and this was our second stay, but we couldn’t sleep either time because of a very bright green LED light, possibly from a smoke alarm, right above the bed. We ended up lying there with towels wrapped around our eyes, which got pretty old. In the end we left at 3am and drove home. Luckily we live nearby. It really spoiled what would otherwise have been a good experience.
