Ryan's Rest Boutique Accommodation

We found ants crawling in and out of an unemptied bin, across the cooker, and into a hole in the wall as soon as we arrived. We had to buy ant spray ourselves to deal with them. A cyclone meant we ended up checking out early, thankfully.

I didn't feel welcome here. The woman who cleaned the accommodation each day never greeted us or smiled, though she did greet some of the “white” guests. That felt really bad, and I hope it improves. The location itself is excellent, right across from the train station and shopping centre, and only a two-minute walk to the jetty. Cooking was convenient too.

The owners were quick to respond and help, and the house has a cosy, welcoming feel that was almost like being at home. The Wi-Fi was fast, the air conditioning worked well, and there was a cute little pool to relax by. I'm only on my first night and already loving the stay. If you're unsure, I'd say go for it. It's conveniently close to Cairns city, and I'd definitely come back on my next visit.

Cam was very pleasant, as was his father, who looks after the linens. The bathrooms were fairly clean, and I liked the lounge and open-air kitchen. The train station for Kuranda is close, and Cairn Central mall is about a ten-minute walk away. It's around 25 minutes from the CBD, and your experience may depend on who else is staying. We had several families there, with kids yelling and crying. If you just need a basic place to sleep, this will do.
