Port Mill Bed And Breakfast

Breakfast banana bread was always a welcome treat. It’s a lovely, quiet and cosy B&B, and the rooms were kept clean. The spot in Fremantle is hard to beat: close to the markets, Esplanade park and the Roundhouse, with Freo station and Victoria Quay an easy walk away. There are plenty of places to eat and drink along the street and nearby.

The breakfast was really good, and the ladies who clean and put the breakfast tray together were friendly and helpful. Nothing seemed like a problem for them. Once you find the place, it’s a nice base for enjoying Fremantle at your own pace, and it’s great for a couple. It can be a little tricky to locate, though, and the stairs are tight with a large suitcase, so I’d bring an overnight bag. My only other complaint was the fan above the end of the bed, which badly needed cleaning.

A lovely little place in a small heritage building, with nicely decorated rooms. The bed was very comfortable, breakfast was a good continental spread, and all the attractions are within walking distance. Highly recommended.

Fremantle itself was great, but the room made the stay a real disappointment. I’d booked months ahead expecting a balcony over the garden courtyard, then arrived to find the room had been double booked. Instead, I got what felt like the least desirable room in the hotel, with a balcony and window facing a brick wall and not even a view of the sky. It was so small there was only room for the bed and two dining chairs at its foot, and I felt claustrophobic. The courtyard garden is lovely, but guests can’t sit and relax there because there are private residences in the complex. There’s no guest parking, either. I couldn’t negotiate with the property manager. He didn’t seem interested or willing to take responsibility for making the stay pleasant, and didn’t offer to look into a solution. Next time I’ll stay home and take the train to Fremantle instead. I’ll save over $500 and still see the sights.
