Rockhampton Backpackers YHA

I wasn't expecting much. The place looked old and messy, and the bed sheets smelled bad. The room stayed hot even with the air conditioning running all night. The bathroom was actually clean, and parking was available.

I stayed for more than five months, and the place was worth every dollar. The rooms and shared spaces were good, including the kitchen, backyard, TV room, and pool. It had a really nice atmosphere overall. Steph, the owner, is a great person and is always there to help however she can.

I'd been happy with YHA before this stay, but now I'll think twice about booking again. We were lucky to be there for just one night. The place was generally filthy. Our old room was dusty and not cleaned properly, the bed was uncomfortable, and the sheets were disgusting and ripped. The fridge was old and dirty too. The shower was so small that it was really hard to wash properly. The woman at reception seemed quite rude at first. After talking with her, I got the sense that's just her personality, but I think she could try to be more welcoming. She also seemed to be there all the time by herself, which must be exhausting. We paid $65 for a double room, which felt expensive for what we got.

The host was arrogant and lazy, and the reception was the worst I've ever experienced.
