Sydenham Rail Station is across the street, and planes regularly come in low overhead. Still, the GC is a nice place and clearly popular with the neighbourhood. Inside it’s modern enough, with plenty of floor space, hardwood fixtures and friendly staff. I enjoyed lunch: the Duck Salad and Schnitty were cooked well and came in good portions, though they cost $30. Dinner was the spicy salmon and Balmain bug linguine, and it was delicious at $35. We stayed overnight in room 2. It was large, clean and modern, though the patio was locked. I’d stay again and eat here anytime.

There were plenty of places to sit, a welcoming feel, and a great range of food. I had the Angus grain fed rump steak and my wife ordered the hamburger. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. We had Sunday lunch with another family and really enjoyed it. Highly recommended, we’ll be back.

It gets pretty crowded on some nights, though our weekday lunch was fine, and the pub is very close to the station. When we visited, the aircon was good on a hot day, there wasn’t much background noise or intrusive music, and the food, drinks and service were reasonably priced and well presented. Good for a pub.

That mint pea cabbage salad stole the show. Fresh and punchy, it went surprisingly well with my steak. The chips were fine too, and the red wine jus was spot on. I’d just wandered off the train at Sydenham looking for somewhere to work when I found the General Gordon Hotel by chance. Don’t be fooled by the outside, it’s seriously impressive inside. The wine list was solid, and a stranger passing by recommended the $24 lunch steak. Great call: beautifully cooked with simple salt and pepper seasoning. Just a genuinely good meal. Five stars, and I’d drop in again. No pics, ate it all 😝

We love bringing our members to the General Gordon Hotel. The team always looks after Inner West Theatre Company so well, and our launch and wrap parties at the GG over the past few seasons have been great nights. Friendly staff, good food and drinks, and a really nice vibe. Absolute winner.
