The Coast Motel

The pool’s nice for cooling off, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. But if you’re hoping to sleep in, forget it. The timber Venetian blinds let in too much light, so the rooms don’t get dark.

The room was spacious and lovely, and the staff we met were friendly, but the strong cigarette smell throughout it made the stay really unpleasant for us as non-smokers. The place was full, so changing rooms wasn’t an option. We understood that, but would’ve liked the owner to take the problem seriously. Instead, he tried to deny it, which felt unfair given guests’ right to a smoke-free environment in Australian hotels. It’s a shame, because the room had potential, but the smell and the unwillingness to help let it down. We wouldn’t stay again unless the smoking issue is properly dealt with.

The room and bathroom had plenty of space, but I couldn’t get any sleep. There’s no soundproofing at all. I heard the person next door fart repeatedly, their whole phone conversation, and even their snoring. People were coming and going at all hours, and the bottleshop delivery trucks started at 5:30 in the morning and were really loud. The corridor smelled of wetness and dog shampoo, and there’s no elevator. The owner seems nice, which is a shame, but I won’t be back.

I stayed here years ago, before it was done up, and the beds then were all sunken at the foot from people sitting on the ends. I did love the daily motel service, with tea and coffee supplies and those tiny little milks. I drink pantry milk now because of that, so I still think of this motel and Yeppoon. Maybe I’ll come back someday to see how it’s changed. Any photos I add will show how it used to look.
