The meals at the bistro were a real highlight. Eloise cooked and served the food herself, explaining the dishes and the fresh local produce. We tried her Tasting menu on the first night, and the steamed Parrot fish in an asian style stood out, especially since we’d never had that fish before. The other dishes were excellent too, and the homemade bread and pate are well worth trying. We returned the next night for bread as an entree and paella for the main, with plenty for two and fresh ingredients throughout. Eloise has cook books for sale, and we were lucky to find a free copy of one in our room. We stayed two nights in one of the four chalets, met the owner Eloise at check-in, and booked dinner then. The accommodation was clean and tidy, with a comfortable bed, a good-sized spa bath, and a washer and dryer in the bathroom. There were water views and lots of wildlife, mostly in the evening. It’s fully self-contained and convenient for visiting Port Arthur and Eaglehawk Neck. We’d definitely stay again. Thankyou Eloise.

The atmosphere was acceptable, but the prices felt high. The food was below average in flavour, and portions seemed small for this price range. The paella wasn’t traditional and came with chicken, and the rice was burnt, which was very disappointing. When I mentioned the bitter taste of the paella, the manager responded rudely and rejected my complaint, saying it was “an original flavor.” Anyone can see my photo.

The wood fire made the cosy interior warm and inviting. It’s a charming little bistro in southern Tasmania, and a nice place to stop after visiting Port Arthur. There’s a good range of food and wine on the menu, and the resident chief has written several cookbooks. We picked up a couple.

We chose this spot because we wanted a quiet lunch after the crowds at the historical site and the packed Lavender Farm carpark. The restaurant was empty when we arrived, which might usually worry me, but the young woman at the front counter was so pleasant and smiley that we felt comfortable giving it a try. Both meals were delicious and made with fresh produce, and the service stayed just as friendly as more customers came in. The wait wasn’t long, but enough to tell us the food was freshly prepared. For a small bistro, the wine list is broad. I enjoyed a Bream Creek Riesling with the Lemon Myrtle Crusted Fish. I only wish the fish had been a little more crusty, or well cooked, though fish can be delicate to get just right. I read reviews and often write them myself, and I couldn’t disagree more with claims that the portions are too small. I love good food, and in my opinion those comments are unfounded.

My wife and I had an amazing day. We shared smoked fish pate as an entree, then I had pork steak and she ordered the red lentil and cauliflower Dahl. We finished with Blue Cheese and Pear and Plum Crumble. There was so much food, and it was all delicious. Thanks, Eli, you exceeded our expectations. The Bream Creek Pinot Gris was great too. 😁😁
