Civic Guest House - Hostel

The biggest problem was getting any sleep. Sound carried through the paper-thin walls, and there didn't seem to be quiet hours. Every night, groups talked loudly in Spanish and Italian until 3 AM. One person showered with music blasting at 2 AM, another group played a keyboard until 1 AM on my last night, and a traveler shouted on her phone in the hallway at 2 AM. The hostel needs to enforce quiet from 10 PM so guests who want to go sightseeing can rest. If you're a light sleeper, bring very strong earplugs or stay elsewhere. On my final night, heavy rain came through the ceiling onto my bed and even my face. At $71 a night, I expected better. The staff and cleanliness were top-notch, but a hostel should at least offer a dry bed and somewhere people can sleep. There were good points. The bathrooms and showers impressed me with how clean they were, and the hostel consistently smelled great. The team was lovely, friendly and welcoming. The location is fantastic, with cafes and restaurants just around the corner, a 20-minute walk to the beach, and the Greyhound bus station 15 minutes away by bus. There's a kitchen, but its hygiene depends on the guests. Many people washed dishes so half-heartedly that I didn't feel comfortable using the plates without washing them myself.

The old building has no insulation, so noise travels and you can hear guests who are a bit loud. Most people were considerate, though, so it usually wasn't a problem. My son and I were happy and comfortable here, and I'd stay again when in Townsville. For budget travellers, I would recommend Civic Guest House. Our room was clean on arrival, and the shared shower and toilet stayed clean. The kitchen was clean and nicely kept, with staff doing a good job staying on top of it. Most of the other backpackers were polite and considerate, and this isn't a party destination.

The outdoor social areas were plentiful, and the pool was big and clean. Inside, the room was clean and freshly decorated, with really comfortable beds. There were plenty of clean toilets and showers, and the showers had hot, strong water. Staff were helpful. The kitchen was spotless and had everything, even an air fryer, plus there was a free tea, coffee and water station. Really, I have no complaint.

The location worked well, just a short walk to the CBD and at the foot of Castle Hill. For the price, I was seriously surprised by how good this hostel was. I spent two nights in a seven-bed dorm and really enjoyed it. The dorm had its own bathroom with a toilet and showers, which was handy, and two fridges for food. Everything felt clean and comfortable. Someone has put thought into the setup: there's a fountain for filling bottles, a separate fridge for food if you check out late, and a stove that heats quickly. I'd definitely recommend staying here, especially for the price.
