The vegan salad wasn’t available, so the only vegan choice was the generic “eggplant schnitzel.” The food itself was OK. Raj was incredibly rude and dismissive, and made a customer asking a question feel extremely uncomfortable. The other staff member behind the bar was gracious and stepped in to help with the query.

The food was great quality and good value, and toucan doo❣️ provided fantastic entertainment. Our booked table was occupied, so we waited 15 minutes to sit down. When we did, staff left the plates and cutlery from the previous occupants on the table. The tables were so sticky we used menus as placemats. Wine and champagne choices could be better, and the prices more reasonable. Wine is quite expensive compared with other hotels in the area.

I could barely sleep, and getting back into the building in the morning was a mess. I was out for food at 7am and returned around 7:45am, only to find neither key would open the entry door. There was no doorbell and no one available to let me in. I walked around town, came back at 8:15am and again at 8:45am, with nobody there. On my third try at 9:15am I got back to my room, packed and left. Breakfast hadn’t been offered either. Saturday night brought loud music from the pub downstairs from about 7pm until nearly 1am, followed by drunk customers shouting after 2am. Inside the room there was no TV, although the layout plan showed one. The only small TV I saw was in the common room, where a long-term resident was using it. There was just one bedside cabinet, no hangers or hooks, so all my clothes stayed in my bags on the floor. No AC or fan, just a small heater. In December in Australia, really? The hallway was very dark in the late afternoon and at night, even with the sensor light on. In the shared bathrooms, most toilet and shower partition locks didn’t work, and some doors wouldn’t close properly. Actually, only one toilet lock worked. The common room had a very limited supply of tea bags, coffee sachets and milk pods for a hotel with 33 guest rooms. Finding the upstairs room was confusing too. At reception, a staff member, who seemed like the boss, responded coldly and told me to see the lady on the other side of the room. I was given two keys and told only that the room was upstairs. I took the main, wider staircase I’d passed on entering, but the upstairs door was locked and neither key opened it. I later noticed it was bolted from the other side. Back at reception, I spotted a narrower set of stairs behind it. After going up and opening a locked door with one key, I was hit by a strong smell of cigarette smoke. A long-term resident was smoking on the balcony outside the common room, beside the hallway and balcony door, and the smoke was blowing into the hallway. I found this single-night stay in Victor Harbor through a Trivago website search and ended up at the “Grosvenor Hotel.” It was a huge mistake. I should have researched more instead of trusting Trivago to direct me to this hotel’s website. It was possibly still the cheapest stay in Victor Harbor, but not worth half the price I paid. I’d give the rating negative 10 if I could. When I got home and checked reviews and comments, I saw ratings of 6 to 6.5. The positive comments were about the pub and restaurant, while the negative ones came from people who had slept in the hotel. Bad hospitality and management for hotel guests.

We had a great weekend in Adelaide. Congratulations to Gail and the team. As an affordable pub stay right in the centre, I’d recommend it. Thanks!

We tried three pubs in VH, and the Grosvener felt like the most traditional one, so we decided to have dinner there. I ordered chicken parmi with mushroom sauce. Nothing fancy, just a decent meal that hit the spot, exactly what I was after.
