Mates Gully

We came across this place by chance, then decided to have lunch the next day. The food didn't disappoint. The waiter said it was produced on their farm where possible, and otherwise sourced locally. We had fritters and lamb shank, which we wished we'd photographed, followed by scones with the house-made special jam. So good. If you want a relaxed vibe with great food and service, give it a try. Two thumbs up from us.

My family's different dietary needs were accommodated by the staff. I was a little disappointed, though, that my poached eggs came on just three tiny bits of toast. The regular egg and bacon brioches looked amazing. Lovely coffee, and the building is beautiful.

The food was incredible, despite the small menu, which makes sense for a paddock to plate restaurant. We enjoyed two lovely NSW wines and amazing homemade ice cream, and we're popping back tomorrow for wine and pizza. This was our first visit to Wagga Wagga since I was a child, and what a stunning inland city. I'd originally called to book accommodation, but it was full. The friendly man who answered suggested we try dinner instead. I'm glad we made a reservation and visited this special place.

The paintings are superb, and the room is cosy with a brilliant shower. The team at this beautiful place gave first-class service. One thing to know: the bar next door plays seriously loud music on weekends, enough to make the building shake. Ask which nights are quiet and you'll enjoy a fabulous stay.
