It's a shame to see the restored caravanserai vacant and desolate. The entrance gate was locked. The doorman asked me for 2 manate as a bansheesh and would have let me take a peek inside, but I didn't go in. I just stood outside admiring the renovated building.

This historic place was built in the 17th century as a karvansaray, somewhere travelers could stay overnight. It has comfortable rooms, friendly staff, and a beautiful courtyard with a huge old tree in the middle.

A stroll along pedestrianized Javad Khan Street takes you past attractive buildings, some dating to the Russian Empire. Souvenir shops and cafés line their lower floors, with fountains and sculptures dotted along the street. The 17th-century caravanserai is about 100 metres (328 feet) from Juma Mosque. Silk Road merchants used to sleep there overnight before continuing their trips. Recent excavations revealed a sophisticated lighting and ventilation system inside.
