The staff were kind, helpful, and great to talk with, and after a perfect week my husband and I are already booking to return next year. The pool was relaxing, the beach beautiful, and the entertainment had a classy, laid-back feel that suited the hotel. We had a gorgeous ground-floor room overlooking the pool, number 133. We arrived after a week on a cruise, and from the moment I walked in I felt we would have a wonderful stay. The welcome drinks were strong, and check-in went smoothly. The food was superb, with lots of choice at Reef restaurant. We also visited Tumi and Sizzle once each on the all-inclusive plan, and both were fabulous. Colin's was great for lunch and drinks, too. The cocktails were incredible. It was hard to get used to London's weather and work again after such a lovely week.

The staff at Sugar Bay deserve a special mention. My wife and I loved our stay, and the kitchen put out great food. The Reef buffet was fresh, full of flavour, and the choices kept changing while we were there. We liked the local-inspired daily specials at Colin’s Bar/Grill, and had a Valentine's seafood dinner at Sizzle Steakhouse with lobster and blackened snapper. There was talented live music most nights, and fire dancers one evening. Plenty of beach loungers were available, and the ocean felt refreshingly cool in February. The beach and sports team would bring an umbrella when asked. One morning I walked about 15 minutes to Pebbles Beach to watch the racehorses swimming.

I'm giving two stars because my husband and I were treated unfairly on two of our five nights here. I was told I couldn't come in for lunch wearing my cover-up, even though I had worn the same one at breakfast without a problem. I'm a colored girl and may be a little more voluptuous than others, if that makes sense, but it felt unfair to be told to cover up "a little more" when other people could walk around in bikinis with cover-ups. The food was better than the local food, and the food and most of the staff were great. We tipped more than $100 USD for meals at the resort before these incidents, but that wasn't even taken into consideration. There's barely any music by the pool, and outside the nighttime shows there isn't much entertainment. For a family 4- or 5-star resort, there should be things happening across the resort, including by the pool and beach. We've been all over the Caribbean, and this was the worst by far. Our flight was moved to later in the evening, but our request for a late checkout, just one hour past the usual time, was denied. They cater to the senior citizen community. The two stars are for the food, and we tipped 20% as we would have in the U.S.

We had a really relaxing 10-night stay at Sugar Bay in August-September 2025, just what we needed for our first beach holiday in many years. The weather was great, the entertainment superb, and the rum punch was deadly in a good way. The food was great too, with a varied mix of local and international dishes and plenty of choice, however adventurous your palate. A special thank you to the Sugar Bay staff, especially Sophia, Samantha E., Cherese, Andre, Kimberly, and Justin, for making our stay so special. We can't wait to go back!

When I asked whether the half of my payment that Sugar Bay Hotel kept could go toward a stay within the next 30 days, they said no. I spoke with two representatives, and neither showed much empathy or tried to find another option. I’d had to cancel just one day before arriving in Barbados because someone in my family had died. I understand there are cancellation policies, but the refusal felt especially cold given the circumstances. I’ll still visit Barbados, but I won’t stay here or recommend the hotel. A bit of compassion would have gone a long way.
