Hotel Sanglier

The room was lovely, the staff were friendly, and the location was great. We kept falling into the gap because the bed was two smaller beds pushed together. Breakfast was confusing: it was listed as “available” when we booked, and staff told us where it was, which made it sound included. Then we got a pretty pricey bill the next day. Apparently others have made the same mistake, and that lack of clarity is why I’m taking off stars. Night parking is available for €25.

The room, 1312, felt too dark even in daylight, and the lighting wasn’t good. It’s a nice concept, but it doesn’t really work. We also weren’t aware parking charges would be added to the bill. The thing I disliked most was the cleaners ringing our doorbell at 8 am.

Breakfast was probably the best part, with lovely flavours, fresh honey, chocolate, croissants, waffles, fresh juice that wasn’t watered down, and great coffee. It could get crowded, even near the end, but nobody rushed us and we could take our time. A useful underground link connects the Brusserie to the hotel, and there are art galleries downstairs. The reception was relaxed, and the staff who parked the car and helped with luggage were especially good with guests. We stayed in August, and the rest of the hotel didn’t impress me that much. There are plenty of dark colours throughout. The hallway and room entrance were so dim I needed a flashlight, and the light switches were annoying to figure out. The curtains don’t block daylight properly because they’re fitted badly. The elevators were a bit dirty. We managed to fit a small extra item in our superior room, but it made the room cramped. The minibar was basic, and I wondered if there was a smaller garbage bin. The hotel didn’t have a pool, so we didn’t look at the spa. The welcome drink had to be claimed before 5 pm, which meant we couldn’t get one later. Parking is on a hill behind the hotel, with one electric charger; staff can handle charging, but idle fees apply. The wine cellar was available, though it wasn’t clear what it was for or advertised. The gym had only three machines, probably the smallest I’ve seen, and access costs €20 per month. For a 5-star hotel, I expected things to be perfect.

The location is absolutely AAA, and the wellness area is top notch, with a six guest limit. The hydro beds were incredibly relaxing, and the jacuzzi view was phenomenal. Rooms are beautiful and minimalist, though quite dark by design. Breakfast was very good, if a bit crowded at busy times. Everyone on the staff made an effort to speak our language, whether Dutch, English, or French, and they corrected a billing mistake straight away. The service was excellent. Parking is a five-minute walk away, which is inconvenient if you’ve left something in the car. Definitely recommend it for a weekend away.
