Hotel Wellness Eau de Roche

Update: Don’t be taken in. A lot of the five-star reviews here seem fake. This place wasn’t worth the money or even four stars, and I’d strongly advise against staying. The service was rude, when staff could be found at all. The rooms were dirty and in poor condition, and so was the hotel generally. Most troubling was the musty smell throughout, along with what seemed like worrying damp on the ground-floor walls.

We regretted choosing this hotel. We stayed three nights, and wouldn’t have stayed for nights two and three if we hadn’t booked in advance. It’s nowhere near a four-star hotel, or even close to three stars. The reviews praising it may be fake, as another guest has said. Breakfast was awful. Although it was supposed to run until 10:30, you had to arrive in the first hour to get anything. After that, everything was gone, and even when we asked for a croissant, they said there were none left. One morning there was a large hair in my juice. I showed the woman working there, but she said it wasn’t a hair and drank it herself. Reception was also terrible. The woman serving guests spoke only French. We asked to have our room cleaned, but it was just tidied up, not actually cleaned. A complete waste of money and a terrible experience.

The way we were treated cast a shadow over what could have been a lovely stay. We were a group of African descent, and the hotel manager disregarded us and made us leave the pool after a miscommunication with the hotel team. We’re used to what we call the “black treatment,” though I don’t want to sound paranoid. Put your money where your presence is valued. The town is great, with historic architecture, and the “Eau de roche” hotel is very well located and neat. The rooms are spacious, and the bathtub is out of this world. We were there for a birthday celebration.

Durbuy is a beautiful city, but I’d never recommend this hotel. At 220€ a night, the stay was terrible, and I left more stressed than when I arrived, even though I’d come for a break from extreme stress. There were kids running around an unattended pool, and the pool facilities weren’t clean. Our bathroom had mildew, and the shower needed fixing. In the room we got paper cups and just one tea bag to share between two. The night receptionist refused when we asked for another. I was concerned about security too. The hotel doors were wide open at night with nobody at reception, so anyone could walk in. Breakfast was okay, but the receptionist was also the waitress and cook. I felt sorry for her. She was very polite and professional, but a hotel like this should have more staff.
