The orchards were wonderful, and the owners’ explanations were fascinating and educational for both kids and adults. But we didn’t find the Malus holiday home suitable for a group of 32, or really as a holiday home at all. There was only a regular dishwasher, on the first floor, so carrying things back and forth was frustrating and impractical. The rooms smelled damp and musty, and had heavy old fabric blankets instead of down comforters. There’s no central heating downstairs, and heating the whole area with a wood stove isn’t possible.

You can pick all sorts of fresh organic fruit here, apples like Jonagold, Jonagored, Pinova, Cox, Braeburn and Elstar, plus pears. Eating them straight off the tree is hard to beat, whether you bring the kids or come on your own. They also sell delicious organic juice, and you can sit down for coffee or tea with a freshly baked pancake.
