Hotel Troopeird

Breakfast was a really relaxing start to the day. You sit at a table in the airy conservatory, looking out over the modest but well-kept garden, tell the server what drink and style of egg you want, and it’s brought to you. The eggs are cooked fresh in just a few minutes and served in their own Le Crusset-like pan. Some might find that approach a bit lazy, but I liked it much more than the lukewarm, rubbery buffet food at big chains like Ibis. Dinner is served only until 9pm, but there’s a good range of choices. My meal was tasty and went down well with an excellent dark LeForts beer. Troopeird is one of the most reasonably priced, homely hotels I’ve stayed at in years, with a personal feel at mealtimes. The room was spacious, had no creaky floorboards, and was well soundproofed against the main road, though not completely. There were a few annoying cobwebs I walked through when I arrived, so I guessed the room hadn’t been used for a few days. It’s about a 10 minute drive from Kortrijk centre and has perhaps a dozen rooms. The male proprietor seemed slightly surly, though that may just have been because I don’t speak the local language. Still, it’s an excellent, cost-conscious home from home.

The rooms were large, clean and nice. Breakfast was very good, and the staff were friendly.
