Gite des Coteaux

We left Liège with lovely memories, and the gîte itself was magnificent. Anyone who loves old stone buildings will enjoy it. Gîte des Coteaux sits above the city and has a breathtaking panoramic view. The large property seems to contain several gîtes and other accommodation, including the owner's. He didn't introduce himself. Maybe he didn't think a four day stay for four people between Christmas and New Year's needed a welcome. Our 75 m² place was called "La Chaumière" (The Thatched Cottage). It was very well equipped and comfortable, in keeping with a €160 nightly price. Downstairs are the kitchen and living room, with two large bedrooms upstairs, each with a shower. The terrace and lounge area looked lovely, but the weather kept us from enjoying them. The property's position on the hill is the catch. The listing suggests leaving the car at the gîte and walking to the center, but that sounds more suited to athletes who like trail running with a serious climb. Part of Rue Pierreuse runs alongside a staircase the tourist office calls Europe's steepest, with 374 steps and a 30% slope. You need to be in very good shape. We walked down and reached the center after about a hundred meters, but we dreaded the return. The rest stops along the way confirmed why. After that, we drove for our outings. Liège has plenty of parking, which let us enjoy the city. The Christmas market was running despite pandemic related closures elsewhere, and we liked the variety among its 250 stalls.
