Auberge de Jeunesse de Tournai - Hostel

Breakfast was simple, good quality, and plentiful. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and let us check in early because our room was ready. The rooms were basic but clean, with comfy beds. There’s no toilet in the room, but there are plenty of toilet blocks on each floor. The location is great, close to the centre of this historic city, and the train station is a 20 minute walk away. It’s an old building that feels like it’s seen a lot over the years. The hostel was full of rugby supporters in town for the World Cup in nearby Lille, which may explain why the toilet blocks needed better upkeep. The towel dispensers were empty, and a seat on our floor was broken. The fire door in the corridor also slammed loudly every time it closed, and could use padding. Still, it’s a great place for an overnight stay and good value. I’d have given it 5 if the toilets had been better maintained and the door had been quieter.

The location is great, and the common areas are nice. Wifi works well, and the bathrooms are clean. Rooms are a bit spartan, but fine. Breakfast was very good, though the options may be limited. Would recommend.

We really liked the chill out room with its books and DVDs, and breakfast was included with lots of yummy options. It’s a nicely restored old building, within walking distance of the historical center and close to plenty of food options. A tip for couples: for a few euros more, you can get a six bed dorm to yourselves if there’s room.

It was a pleasant, very quiet place to stay, and I’d definitely come back. It’s a little odd that the room has a sink and shower but you have to go down the hall to use the toilet.
