Old Tom

My wife and I stopped for a waffle and coffee. The cappuccino was delicious, but the waffle was disappointing. As you can see in the picture, it had chocolate from a tiny 15gr Nutella portion. We should’ve gone somewhere else, and we won’t be back.

The terrace is a nice place for coffee with a view, thanks to its spot on the main square. The staff are extremely friendly, and you can ask the owner anything. He’s happy to help.

I’ve visited on both of my trips to Ypres, and you can tell from the moment you walk in that it’s special. The tasteful, respectful decor and warm welcome set the tone, and the staff do everything they can to make your visit memorable. We tried several dishes, and all the food was great. The Irish coffee is incredible too. Don’t miss this place if you’re in Ypres!

I’d rate it 5/5 for ambience, 4/5 for service, 3/5 for drinks and cost, and 1/5 for accessibility. Our group used Old Tom as a meeting point while friends came from different areas, but we’d missed the breakfast slot because the kitchen was getting ready for lunch and all the pastries had sold out. We just had coffee while we waited. It was good, though nothing special, and priced about what you’d expect. The cafe and restaurant, with a hotel above, looks lovely inside. The dining areas are clean and modern, decorated with war-related prints and bowler-hat lights. We sat outside at the front, which was pleasant, though it looks onto a parking area. Only the outside spaces are accessible. There are steps into the indoor areas, then more steps to reach the toilets. Unfortunately, the waiter wasn’t very friendly or welcoming. Still, they let us pop to a nearby bakery to buy pastries and bring them back to eat at Old Toms, even though they had none to sell.
