Ginger House

The host was lovely and flexible, and shared lots of useful information about the city. He let us keep our bikes indoors overnight, where they were safe, and store our luggage while we went for a walk the next day. Thank you!

We were three people sharing one bedroom for two nights, and the room was clean and pleasant. The shared shower and toilet's cleanliness depends on how tidy the people using them are, which also gives you a first impression of the fellow guests. There were lots of travellers around, and it was nice to share road stories and experiences with them. Breakfast was simple but good: eggs, toast, porridge and seasonal fruit. There's also a kitchen available if you're particular about what you eat. I was very happy with my stay at Ginger House and would book there again if I come to Plovdiv.

Victoria, who manages the property, was welcoming and friendly. Both our room and the bathroom were clean. The arrival was rough, though: a private party had rented the whole guesthouse the night before, and the guests there yelled at us when we came to leave our bags before exploring. We had to wait a couple of hours and missed the 11 am free walking tour.

Velin really takes time to help you get oriented, marking the town map and pointing out a few spots worth checking out. For the price, and compared with other places in Plovdiv, this is great value, and he goes out of his way to make your stay pleasant. The blankets and sheets felt well used, though, and weren't better than average hostel linens. Most things are an easy walk away, so the location is pretty central, about a block and a half from the center. If you're arriving by train, the roadworks between the station and Ginger House were still significant in August 2023. In the heat, with a group or a lot of bags, a cab may be worth it. You can think you've walked past the works, then have to turn back and go all the way around, adding about 10 minutes. Not much fun when you're carrying luggage, and time out of your day. Despite that, I had an enjoyable stay, thanks in large part to Velin.
