The terrace is the best spot once it gets dark: you can look over the garden and its little pool, then across the whole old town. We were four people on holiday, and the quiet hillside made the stay feel properly restful. The house has what you need, from a fully equipped kitchen to lovely bathrooms, and there's a nearby spring for cold drinking water. A few metres down the road, a small shop sells the basics. Smolyan has plenty of cafés and restaurants, plus a sports field where you can play around and sometimes join a casual game with locals. English isn't spoken by everyone, so we had to improvise a bit. I got by using Russian, English, Bulgarian and German. The setting is a good fit if you like mountains, hiking or skiing and don't mind somewhere a little rustic. I'd happily return and recommend it.
