Grand Hotel Bulgaria

Grand Hotel Sofia made my trip feel a bit like a film. The rooms are oversized, the corridors are lined with art, and the spot beside the City Garden is hard to beat. It has a quietly theatrical quality, like the city is opening a velvet curtain and letting you in on a secret. My mornings slowed down and my evenings felt softer here. If you're trying to choose a place to stay in Sofia, or looking for a top five-star hotel in Bulgaria, this one feels grand without trying too hard.

We didn't try the gym or spa, though they looked nice. They're in a somewhat odd part of the hotel, basically the basement. The staff were helpful and very nice, and the restaurant served a great breakfast. We didn't eat there for other meals, but assume dinner would be good too. Our room was massive and comfortable, and the hotel is right in the heart of Sofia. The only reason I rated service four stars was a couple of small hiccups with transfers from the airport and to Sunny Beach. Both worked out, but less smoothly than we'd hoped. The hotel did provide an acceptable remedy.

We were just a few minutes on foot from the main attractions, and the staff were especially kind. The rooms were clean and spacious, and breakfast was varied and delicious. A distinctive stay in a royal setting, with comfort, warm service, and a great location.

I canceled my trip after finding out that the Sofia Christmas Festival had ended before the date I booked for a one-night stay at Grand Sofia Hotel through Booking. I explained the situation, but the hotel flatly rejected my refund request. I then asked twice to change the date and offered two alternatives. Both requests were refused, with no flexibility or apparent willingness to help. That rigidity is unacceptable in hospitality. The staff showed no professionalism, customer focus, or basic goodwill. It was clear that helping a guest wasn't an option. If this is how they treat people before arrival, I can only imagine what a stay would be like. Extremely disappointing, and I'd strongly advise others to avoid this hotel.
