Stivan Iskar

The location is convenient, very close to St. Alexander Cathedral and the airport, but my stay was extremely disappointing. At arrival, an elderly woman tried to charge me twice the price listed on their website. My basic room had no AC, and the bathroom smelled so strongly of sewage that I kept the windows open all night just to cope. The advertised WiFi only worked by reception, not in the rooms. At checkout, I was waiting for a taxi on the reception sofas and eating with my children, aged 5 and 11, when another elderly woman started shouting at us and demanding we leave. I told her not to shout or swear in front of my children. She called over a young man and woman, whom I assumed were her children. When I took my phone out to record what was happening, the young man threatened to "take it and smash it." The young woman picked up our suitcases and threw them out onto the street. I was extremely disappointed. I wanted to call the police, but the language barrier made me hesitate, and I was afraid they would side with the staff if they lied about what had happened.

The firm mattress suited me well, though some people may not like that feel. The rooms and toilets were fine, and the bathroom was clean with all the basics, even if it was very old. The building is dated too. My allergies didn't react, which was a real plus. The location is in a busy part of the city, so the sound insulation could be better. Prices have risen a little since my last visit. It's a family-run business, and check-in was a great experience. Later, though, the woman working there was rude and seemed focused only on someone she was speaking to on the phone. I had to explain several times that I was already checked in and needed my key and luggage before she paid attention. The WiFi worked last time, but not much this time.

It's a small room, but warm and comfortable enough for a few days. You can walk to the centre and the main sights. The family-run place is well located, and the reception has a cozy sofa area where you can have tea or coffee. The staff were helpful, though not friendly at all, they never smiled. The room smelled strongly of cigarettes, which was unpleasant as a non-smoker. A street light outside kept switching on every minute, which got annoying.

The staff were the best part of Stivan Iskar Hotel, so friendly, chatty and helpful. They even helped me practice my Bulgarian, they helped me with a shipment from the Bulgarian language!! I loved staying here, it was just right for me. I'd come back just to see them again.
