Saint Eustatius felt just right for getting away from crowds, and hiking up to see the volcano was a highlight. We spent three nights at Golden Rock Hotel last August for my birthday, and the whole stay was unforgettable. The team made us feel looked after from the minute we arrived, including a thoughtful welcome surprise in our room. We booked scuba diving through the hotel too. Bruno was attentive and professional, and made sure we were comfortable the whole time. We really did feel like VIPs. We’d love to come back for another peaceful break with that kind of service.

We arrived on a Monday and it was so quiet that the pools felt like they were ours. We loved the calm, though I imagine the resort gets busier on weekends. It has room for plenty of guests, and the restaurants can handle them too. The cottages are roomy and set well apart, with lovely, well-kept gardens around them. Most paths are nicely lit, and there was great music by the huge pools. You can also get terrace service at the large pool near the restaurant. A beautiful luxury resort.

Getting into town for more restaurant options is about a 10 minute drive, but finding a ride was never an issue. The food on site was good, and both restaurants were very good, as were the drinks. The resort itself is fantastic. Room cleaning and sheet changes could use some improvement.

Golden Rock made things much easier for us since I keep kosher. They supplied brand-new pots, pans, and utensils, and brought fresh eggs every morning. That was a big help for me, my wife, and our three young children. The grounds are beautiful, and every staff member we met was welcoming, kind, and ready to help. We had a great island tour and an unforgettable hike up Quill National Park. Then our return boat to St. Kitts was unexpectedly canceled, leaving us stranded. The team acted right away and arranged a small charter plane at an amazing price. Their help in such a stressful moment meant a lot. We had a wonderful stay and can’t wait to return.

We came away disappointed with the spa and dining, especially for a Michelin Key property. The spa couldn’t schedule two massages at once, even though couples massages were advertised, so we skipped it. Meals took about an hour at breakfast, 90 minutes at lunch, and two hours at dinner, sometimes when the restaurant was mostly empty. It felt like waiting around, not paced fine dining. Orders from different kitchens arrived at different times, so one person was often watching their table partner eat. Menus barely changed, and the things we wanted were often unavailable. French toast advertised with caramelized bananas never arrived that way. Once it came with one banana slice and a blueberry, which almost felt intentional. We spent about $300/day on the all-inclusive package and never broke even, partly because we chose to eat in town. On dive days, the boat lunch was drenched in mayo-based dressings, fries included, so we often skipped it. After multiple complaints and four wasted meals, they finally got it right on the last day. Tara was a bright spot: she had a sense of urgency, and service noticeably improved when she was working. For the check, walking up to pay at the hostess stand is much quicker. The room was my favorite part, especially after 20 hours of nonstop travel. The bed was extremely comfortable and the finishes were high-end. The accent lighting was an adventure, with about 24 switches in a tiny room. We laughed whenever one of us had to click half of them to get the right vibe. The shower was great, with both an overhead head and an attachment, though the attachment broke the first time we used it. They fixed it the next day without us calling. Towels were a constant hassle. We usually had two bath towels, but washcloths and hand towels came inconsistently. One night I left all the used towels in the tub hoping for fresh ones. When I got back, there was one clean hand towel and one towel pulled from the tub. Not the end of the world, but not luxury-level either. The grounds are gorgeous. The lagoon was closed, but it was still lovely to walk around. The gardens were beautiful and well maintained, and the greenhouse and sustainability signs were interesting. I was surprised by the lack of mosquitoes, since they normally love me. There were plenty of spiders, but I’d take webs over bites any day. The cliffside trail was great, with giant hermit crabs, baby goats, and a historic cannon. Visibly dirty cushions on the pool chairs and dining seats were a letdown. Everything is white and needs regular deep cleaning. Sitting on dirty cushions at a luxury resort just wasn’t the vibe. Transportation around the island was hit-or-miss, with rides about 30 minutes late, though our airport pickup was on time. On the surface, it’s a beautiful, sustainable resort, but the experience didn’t live up to the hype.
