Hotel Monasterio

The decor is amazing, and the customer service was excellent. It’s also a clean, convenient spot in Sucre, with towels and basic toiletries provided. Go up to the top of the building for a glimpse of the city. There are some drawbacks: the walls and doors are so thin that you hear everything. Despite the no-dog policy, a dog in the next room made noise. The internet was spotty, and the beds felt small, though I can’t say whether they’d be different elsewhere. Continental breakfast was okay. They should put prices on the drinks in the rooms.

From an American perspective, the location, clean room, comfortable bed, and great staff were all positives. But I was disappointed overall, mainly because the WiFi was far too slow. I got only 0.5 to 1.5 Mbps. Short Reddit videos wouldn’t load, Netflix streaming wasn’t possible, and the connection couldn’t support my work VPN. I’d hoped to get work done there. I now have a room at a nice hostal for less than half the price of Monasterio, with 4.5 Mbps. The room doors were another serious issue. They were flimsy 1.5-inch wooden doors with glass, which seemed unsafe to me since a child could kick one in. The windows also meant I couldn’t make the room fully dark. The hotel is a large atrium with rooms around the walls, and those cheap doors let sound travel through the whole place. Several mornings I woke at 7 AM to people eating breakfast and talking across the hotel. I could even hear toilets flushing five or six rooms away.

Right in central Sucre, this classic hotel feels spacious and very quiet. The bed was comfortable, and breakfast was great. I’d recommend staying here if you’re in Sucre.

They act like a four-star hotel, but the service was nowhere near that. There wasn’t anyone to help bring our luggage to the room, and I left without checking in. They still charged me for one night just for storing my bags. They seemed to have no idea what customer service means. Stay away, there are better places in Sucre where your money gets you a better stay. Don’t be taken in by the photos or price, you’ll be disappointed. I chose to pay more and stayed at the Santa Maria Parador instead, where the service felt suited to and welcoming of international guests.
