Hotel Carmen

The stay itself was pleasant. Our room was nice, with an outdoor deck, a comfortable bed, and a small kitchen. It had only a few things, though: a kettle, pot, and plates. Breakfast was good every morning, and housekeeping were friendly. The trouble was with reception and payment. For our six nights, we owed $446.00 USD, about 3280 BOB, and the amount kept changing during check-in. We finally paid in full but got no receipt. At checkout they asked for another $378 BOB without explaining why, and wouldn't call us a taxi until we paid. Worried we'd miss our flight, we gave in so we could leave. It left us with a bad feeling, like a cash grab, and we won't stay again.

The rooms are small but comfortable, and a little dark. You get TV, free internet, and a continental breakfast. There’s no elevator. It’s good value and well placed, four blocks from the Main Square.

Clean, practical rooms, though you can hear too much from outside. I gave it 3 stars for the value, but asking for a second towel seemed like a reasonable request since my partner wanted one to dry her hair. The guy at the desk was as unfriendly and unhelpful as he could be.

A charming traditional hotel at affordable rates, close to the city center. Staff were attentive and friendly, breakfast buffet was delicious, and there was plenty of hot water in the shower. Plaza Oriundo is two blocks away, as are Tarija's best steak houses.
