Hotel Palacio de Sal

The room fell far short of what we'd expected. The facilities seemed outdated, the bathroom smelled strongly unpleasant and drained poorly, and the towels were worn, with some torn and heavily stained. Sound carried badly through the walls, so we could hear everything from the halls and neighboring rooms, while the windows did little to block noise from the nearby park. We'd specifically booked and confirmed a VIP double room for our honeymoon, but were given a twin room with separate beds. Reception said nothing could be done because the hotel was fully booked, and made no real effort to find a solution. The lack of accountability was frustrating and disheartening. The stay didn't meet basic standards, let alone what was promised for a VIP honeymoon. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone expecting comfort or quality.

We had a delicious buffet dinner, with lots of vegetarian choices, and the staff were wonderful and accommodating. The showers had good pressure and warm water. An onsite medic is available 24/7, and the doctor was wonderful and helped my kids with mild altitude sickness symptoms. The lobby was constantly clean. Still, the pool incident scared me off swimming. I dipped my feet in at the edge and suddenly got electrocuted by a tea light beside the pool. I told the staff, but don't know what happened after. I'd never been electrocuted before, and this life threatening incident was frightening. I want to say again that the staff were super nice and tried to address my issues, but that kept me from giving five stars. The lobby gives an impression of luxury and class, but my room felt like a burning sauna when I entered. They sent a fan to deal with the heat. The room phone didn't work when I tried calling my husband's room, though that was no big deal. The beds were fluffy and comfortable until 2am, when the fan stopped. My phone stopped charging too, though curiously the light stayed on. Being unable to sleep after the fan went off in the middle of the night was another reason I couldn't give five stars.

For our honeymoon, my partner and I booked a VIP double room. It was confirmed at check-in, but when we got to the room we found they'd mistakenly given us a twin room with separate beds. My partner went back to reception, where they said they couldn't do anything because all the other rooms were full. They offered nothing else. I thought that was unfair and asked for a discount since it wasn't what we'd booked and we were very disappointed. They only offered free food and a bottle of wine, which we accepted because we knew we wouldn't get anything more. Then they gave us the smallest plate of food for two people. Disgraceful behavior. I wouldn't recommend staying there if that's how they think guests should be treated.

We had a fantastic experience that we won't forget. The hotel did a great job overall, and the staff were friendly, patient, and responded well when I pointed out areas that could have been better. I also had to remind myself that sudden altitude changes can cause altitude sickness and affect how you react to minor inconveniences.
