OYO Pousada Maria Maria

The location near the Basílica is good, and I left our car on the street without anything happening, though I couldn't feel completely at ease. For the price they charge, though, there's a lot that needs fixing. There is no included parking, and it costs 20 reais a night. At some times there was no one at reception. One woman was trying to handle the rooms and the front desk while also working at the other inn. Our room had no toilet paper or towels, so we had to get those at the other inn. The beds were very narrow, the wardrobe was coming apart, and there was a chair beside the bed instead of a nightstand. At least there was air conditioning. There was no minibar in the room, only one available to rent for 50 reais a day. The bathroom was grimy, with a plastic shower curtain whose rail was also dirty. The bathroom window faced another room, so we had to be careful while showering. I had to use the kitchen fridge to chill water. When I opened it, it was dirty and smelled awful, with what looked like blood from meat that had thawed spilled inside. Other guests had used the stove and left the stove and sink a mess. Breakfast was served at the other inn, about 100 meters away. The coffee was weak, the spread wasn't well presented, and the other food was left uncovered, where flies could land. Tables were cramped on the veranda in front of the rooms, and some were in the sun. When I went down at night to get the water, there was nobody around to help. It felt like we were staying there as a favor. When I asked the owner about some things, she said it was an inn for people who only wanted somewhere to spend the night. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The staff were friendly and made me feel very welcome, and the location is good. The accommodation needs attention, though. There was no liquid soap in the bathroom, among other things that need sorting out. Apart from that, it was good.

The location for pilgrims is one thing, but charging 200 for a room like this feels like taking advantage of them. The towel they gave me was worse than the oldest one at my house, and the room was awful, worse than somewhere by a highway. I'm never coming back. I only wanted to shower and leave, so I tried to negotiate the price with the owner. She wouldn't lower it and chose to charge me 200.00 for the shower. Awful.

No reception, a ceiling that's falling in, and mold on the walls. The air conditioner and bed were dirty, the bathroom was tiny, the mattress was hard, and the door had no lock. Everything was awful.
