There are homeless people in the area, but the hotel has a guard out front. It's conveniently located within walking distance of a large shopping mall, several bars and restaurants, and Mercado Central. The property is dated, as other reviews say, but that didn't bother me. Everything was clean and the service was good. I'd book again.

We had an uncomfortable stay. The room smelled bad and felt very old, and the hotel seems never to have been renovated. The staff were unfriendly and didn't want to help. They first lied about our request, then ended up refusing it. Breakfast was awful. We tried some fruit and it tasted like onion. Everything about this place was disgusting. I'd rather stay in a favela than in this hotel.

Only one of the three elevators is available, and that sole working one could stop working too. Keep that in mind.

The room was very clean, except underneath the bed. I have sinusitis, and that dust set off an attack. I looked around for the cause and found it there. I'd stay again, but I'd ask them to deal with that when I check in. It's a historic, well-kept place in a great location, and the breakfast and facilities are excellent. One thing to plan for if you're driving: there's no parking in the building. The lot is in another building a block away, and there's no drop-off or pickup space in front of the hotel or efficient valet service.

Even if it were free, I wouldn't stay here. The staff are unfriendly and keep lying, the rooms smell and are dirty, and the pool is closed during its opening hours. Don't go to this hotel.
