Hotel Colonial Iguaçu

The pool area is decent, and the hotel is good value, so it was acceptable overall. The location is good, though the car-focused road layout means you can’t walk anywhere. Uber is inexpensive and works very well. The rooms and public-area decor are a bit dated. The air conditioners can be noisy at night, so bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. Breakfast was OK, but I’d eat dinner elsewhere.

The people working there were nice and helpful, but I wouldn’t put anyone I know in this hotel. We’d seen positive feedback and booked two rooms, which they placed on the lowest level. There’s no elevator, so we had to carry our luggage up and down the stairs. We knew it was a very basic room, but flies and bugs were clearly visible, even on the desserts at the breakfast buffet. Sanitation was a real concern. The room tables and sink were worn out and barely hanging in place, and we all got mosquito bites. The property needs a lot of help.

The rooms are basic but comfortable, and the buffet breakfast has a good spread. The hotel is near the visitor centre at Iguazu falls. There’s no lift, so getting luggage to the rooms can be a chore. Reception staff don’t speak English, which makes communication difficult.

We stayed for two nights in June 2025. I picked this hotel because our flight from Rio was due into Iguazu Falls airport around 1:30 in the afternoon. We planned to see the Brazil side of the falls that same day, which I definitely don’t recommend, and had less than half a day for sightseeing. The hotel is right by the airport, so I thought it would cut down the time getting into town. When we arrived, well past check-in time, the room still wasn’t ready. I had a driver waiting to take us to the park and had to raise my voice to get a room. The front desk guy said he was giving us a “NO MOSQUITO” room. I wondered how many people would choose a room with mosquitoes! 😁 At first the room looked fine, but after dinner on the first night we came back to find water on the floor. The front desk sent someone to mop it, and he got the whole floor wet. That was all they did. The next evening, after we’d been to Iguazu Falls, Argentina, the water was back. This time we saw that the AC pipe was leaking. Housekeeping called the front desk, and we were told a maintenance person would come, but no one showed up. We had to leave the AC off all night and through checkout the next day. At checkout, we mentioned the problem again. The front desk staff LIED and said we’d refused to let maintenance come. Why would we want to spend the night in a room with the AC off? They also said we’d refused a room change, though nobody had offered one. Their “manager was out,” and they took about 25 reais off the bill. That was VERY POOR compensation, considering our luggage might have been damaged by the water and we had to turn off the AC after the second day to stop the leak. If you’re coming from America or Europe, give yourself a full day for each side of the falls, Brazilian and Argentinian, and find a better hotel in town.
