The morning buffet was fresh, plentiful, and delicious, and the shower had such great pressure I didn’t want to get out. Our suite looked out over the area, with hardwood floors and exposed brick, and the view was stunning. The rear suites and pool are built into the mountainside, which made the place feel like our own cozy little world, far from the touristy beaches. Getting there was a bit of a challenge, though: the entrance was hard to find from the street, and the lane up was narrow. Once we got past that, wow. A friendly staff member checked us in and helped with our bags. It didn’t feel like a hotel at all, and I’ve never stayed anywhere quite like it. If I come back to Ilhabela, I don’t think I’d look elsewhere.

The pousada is lovely, but our stay was awful. Our room was infested with ants, and neither the staff nor the owner seemed to care. We had two small children with us who could have had an allergic reaction. We asked to move rooms, but got a blunt no, even though the pousada was empty at the time. We were in the most expensive accommodation, and it also smelled terribly musty. I’ve included photos of the ants and of the solution the staff member on duty suggested: spending the whole night spraying them with insect spray.
