The beach is beautiful and peaceful, but the stay was what got in the way of enjoying it. The facilities were run-down and nothing like the listing, the Wi-Fi was really poor, and the pool was so dirty it had turned green. Doors and windows were broken, and other guests kept making noise through the night without regard for anyone else. We’d first chosen another hostel, but were told it was being renovated and were sent a YouTube video showing this place. The facilities and pool looked nice in the video, so that seemed fine until we arrived.

The hostel itself and its shared space are quite nice, and the location is great, very close to the beach. The kitchen was adequate too. Still, while I was there for a conference, I ran into a few basic problems. My room was spacious, but there was only the sheet on the bed and no blanket available. I also missed having even a small mirror for makeup or just brushing my hair, and there was no mirror in the bathroom with the shower. The light in the other bathroom was out, so I had to use the toilet in the dark or turn on my phone flashlight. There was no toilet paper either. Fixing these details would make the place even better.

The only thing this place has going for it is the location. I’d booked a room at Praia dos Sonhos, but after the power went out there following rain, they sent me here. Please don’t come here. There was mold in the room, broken bathroom windows and a broken shower control. A dented plastic bottle was propping up the balcony railing. The pool and the ground around it were green, the fridge didn’t cool, and both the floors and doors were broken. Just a terrible place.

I’ve never stayed somewhere worse. My girlfriend and I got there at 10:30 and were left waiting until 2 p.m. before we could get into the room. The owner started fixing a door, and when we came back, what we’d been given wasn’t really a room, it was a kitchen with a bed in it. It smelled strongly of mold and was unbearably hot, so in the end he found a very cheap fan to help. The place was dirty, the pool looked dirty, and there were a lot of strange people around who seemed to live there. The owners weren’t welcoming and explained things in a careless way. Don’t go. It’s awful.

We spent five days there, and I have no complaints. It’s peaceful, just the sort of place to get some rest. I thought it was odd that you couldn’t play music, but by the end I was glad, the quiet was lovely. The kitchen is shared and has set hours, which keeps things organized. There’s a bakery nearby, and Mercado Krill is about a 15-minute walk away. It’s also close to the beach. The only thing missing for me was a television. I’ll be back.
