The people were nice, the place was well priced, and it’s very close to the beach. But my room was full of mosquitoes getting in through gaps around the windows and elsewhere. I couldn’t sleep while they were biting me all night, and only managed to rest once the sun came up and the bugs went away.

The atmosphere was young and relaxed, and the space was really accessible. I made friends I’ll keep for life and had a lovely experience. I spent an amazing Christmas at Hostel Guarda Encantada, in Guarda do Embaú. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the beach, and the volunteers and owner were excellent, always welcoming. Such good energy, the kind of hostel that stays with you.

We had a horrible stay, which is a shame because with some order and nice people this place could be a 1000. There’s no drinking water, everything is filthy, the place is all wood, and there are rats. The service was awful, and after checkout you can’t even ask to use the bathroom. We arrived with a reservation for a first-floor shared room, but it was already occupied. They made the girls move to another room at 10 PM. We waited while they finished dinner, then they put us in a tiny 2-by-2-meter room that was unbearably hot. Its window faced another room and had no curtains, so anyone could see us. The volunteer was in a hurry to go to bed and didn’t give us the Wi-Fi password or show us around. The next day another girl had booked a room that also wasn’t available. We waited while they moved people again. There was zero organization.
