The food was just okay, but 99 can get you whatever you want from anywhere. The beach is in a perfect spot away from the crowds, and the surf break is welcoming. There are more than a dozen great tattoo shops too, really cheap, with artists who are next level.

We spent four days here in August. The rooms were roomy and very clean, and breakfast had a huge selection of sweet and savoury food. The staff were lovely and helpful, even though not many spoke much English. For seeing Rio, I especially recommend Giuliano's tour. Ask for him at reception and they'll give you his number, or find him online at “Giu turismo Rio De Janeiro”. Best guide ever. Tickets are included in the price, so you don't have to stand in those endless lines. We saw Cristo Redentor, pão de açucar, escadaria selarón, catedral são Sebastian and são bento monastery all in one day! He knows the city really well, gets you to the best places quickly, and explains what you're seeing in English too. If, like us, you're only in Rio for a few days, it's perfect.

The ocean view is breathtaking, and the place is clean and well kept, though the style feels dated. But there’s no heat in the rooms, and they don’t provide a space heater. I’ve been sick since checking in, and I changed my flight to leave a week early. With no way to get warmth for the arthritis in my legs and knees, I feel like a prisoner in the room. I’m so disappointed 😞

I travel to Brazil for work at least six times a year, and this location works perfectly for me. The hotel is right across from the beach, offers free parking, and the staff are super friendly. Most have worked there for years. Recreio is south of Barra da Tijuca, and prices in Recreio dos Bandeirantes are usually cheaper. The building is outdated, but clean, and the rooms are fine. Poolside food and room service are excellent, and breakfast is very good. It's very good value for the money, and I absolutely recommend it.
